HELPFUL TIPS
Bathing ferrrets
Ferrets really don't need bathing every 5 minutes, you are in danger of spoiling their fur and making it dry. Ferrets groom themselves but a brush during the
moulting seasons would help them. If your ferrets are un-neutered and smell, you won't reduce the smell you will make it worse.GET THEM NEUTERED.
If they roll in something nasty then just give them a bath in luke warm water and dry them thoroughly. Don't spray them with that awful deoderiser you can buy. If
you do use a ferret shampoo do be aware that some ferrets have had an allergic reaction to the insecticidal sort and some have had to go on a drip.

Deep Sleep
You may find your ferrets in a deep sleep occasionally and are unable to wake them. DON'T PANIC. Just lift them them up and gently blow up their nose or pop
their feet in cold water. This will bring them out of their sleepy state. It can be quite scary as they appear dead.

Vomiting
Ferrets aren't animals that usually vomit so a trip to the vet is important incase your ferrets has something lodged inside.

Pet Shop goods.
You will see all manner of products on your pet shop shelves for ferrets. But do yourself and your ferrets a favour and don't buy things to put in their water,
sprinkle on their food etc. Always consult your vet before administering any kind of medication.A good basic diet of dry food/water and raw meat should keep
your ferrets healthy. Some aditives can do more harm than good. You may ask why they are there in the first place if it's not a good idea to use them. There
will always be people who will sell any old thing regardless of whether it is good for that particular animal. Raisins are very poisonous to dogs and ferrets.

Raw meat and ferrets.
We are asked many times if raw meat makes a ferret vicious. The answer is NO. Ferrets are meat eaters that is why they have canine teeth. All meat should
be given raw. Having said that, the beauty of complete ferret food, especially in the summer is that it doesn't attract flies.Plus it is very nutritious. If that is all
you ever want to give your ferrets that's fine, but a bit of variety would be nice and I am sure the ferrets would be grateful.

The Distemper jab.
Some ferret owners have their pets injected against distemper. The drug used is not licenced for ferrets but is not illegal.A few ferrets have died or become
extremely ill following the injection so the choice is yours. Always talk to your vet in detail about it first.

The jill jab.
The jill jab is a way to bring jills out of season but does have side effects. Your jill will most likely have a phantom pregnancy following the jab that can be
upsetting for her and you. It may have to be given twice during the summer . As we see it , it is far better to have your jill spayed at 6 months old then she can
live a long and happy life without complications, plus you will save on vet fees in the long run.

Looking after your ferret before and after operations.
Unlike dogs/cats ferrets should not be starved for long periods before their ops. So food/water should be left in their pens until around 7am the morning of the
op.After the op they should be kept indoors in a warm place for 48hrs to ensure their temperatures don't drop.
Weight loss and gain.
In the Spring a ferret may lose one third of it's body weight and long winter coat. This is all a natural process. In the Winter they should put on a third of their
body weight and their long Winter coat. BUT if your ferret should feel exceptionally bony then a check up at the vets might be needed. A huge sudden weight
gain in the abdominal area could mean an enlarged spleen or fluid due to a heart problem so again don't take it for granted and a vet check may be needed.
